God Bless 'Merica

So sometimes I get these ideas but it is rare that I execute them. I am trying to get more crafty, more often- keyword "trying".

I've made a couple of wreaths before, but they were for my classroom.

I really wanted to make a holiday-something for my front door at home. I knew that it would probably take a longtime for this idea to actually come to fruition, so I knew I had to pick a holiday that was far away. I mean, I could always buy something from Etsy, but something of the size I wanted would be pretty expensive and I am sure would cost another arm and leg in shipping.

My sister-in-law made this for me, so I got the idea that it didn't have to be a traditional wreath, but could be something made out of wood.

I love love love chevron and got the idea to make an American flag out of wood and let the stripes be chevron. My friend Morgan was on board and wanted to make a bunny for herself, so we spent all day Saturday crafting.

First we cut a piece of plywood that we got from her mom's house into a rectangle. We weren't sure how big to cut it, so we just went to her front door and measured what would be reasonable. It ended up being about 24x18 inches.

I painted two coats of white paint as the base and then I laid out the chevron tape. It is Frog Tape brand I bought it from Wal-Mart for like $13. I liked it because it peels off in two sections on the back. This lets you get it stuck exactly where you want it, and then peel off the bottom half and let it stick for sure. I rubbed it to make sure the edges were stuck down so that no paint creeped underneath the edges. It comes with 25 yards, so I still have more than enough for another project.

I painted two coats of red and then traced eight stars onto corner.

I repositioned the painters tape so that I could paint the blue part without it getting on the chevron part. I let it dry, had Morgan's husband drill two holes in it, and ta-da! My door is ready for the Fourth!
