The Entryway Table

So, let me start off by saying that I have no idea what I am doing. Any craftiness I have can be directly contributed to my friends and Pinterest. My sweet friend Alissa has told me recently that I have good ideas, but I think my shaky hand and lack of ability to take risks when it comes to color choices doesn't make me the most crafty person ever. My friends Heather and Morgan lovingly refer to me as "plain," but I prefer the term "basic."

Enter from stage left: a free table. I have been wanting to do something with my entryway for a long time now. We just had it painted the same color as our living room, which put me in middle of Operation De-Brown the Jackson Home. That's right, my whole house is brown. I may be exaggerating, but I feel my house is dark and brown. So when Morgan and Travis gave me their old table, I knew I had to do something with this darling.

I was very overwhelmed, and it sat in the garage with Kyle's golf stuff on top of it for a few months. When Kyle said  "we" should do something with it over Christmas break I knew he meant "Kacee," and I knew he was right. My sister-in-law Nora is a pro at doing things like this to furniture, so when she recommended chalk paint at Christmas, I knew I had to go with it. I did some research and Morgan went with me to pick out the color. I came home with CeCe Caldwell's Santa Fe Turquoise from Something Unique in Pearland at 518 and 35. I also bought some clear wax to finish it off with. Thanks Morgan, without you this beaut would probably be a dark shade of mahogany or something.

I painted 2 coats of the turquoise and it came out pretty well. I used old paintbrushes that I had from when I painted our dining room, and it turned out just fine. However, I think I am going to buy the brush you are supposed to use for waxing, as I think it could be easier than what I did.

I waxed it 2 days after I painted it, and then tried to sand it 2 days after I waxed it- key word: tried. Man! No one ever told me how hard it would be to do it by hand. I had some sanding blocks left over from when we did our kitchen cabinets, so I figured I would be good with those. Boy, was I wrong. I felt like I was getting no where, I was sweaty, and had gotten turquoise dust all over my jammy jams (because it is Christmas break and I am not getting out of my pajamas unless absolutely necessary). I called it a day and put it in the entryway as is. I mean, it looked okay.

For Christmas Kyle's mom is buying us new interior doors, and Kyle wanted to go to Home Depot to look at hardware for the new doors. Since we were there, I figured we would look at electric sanders. A few text messages to Nora later and BAM! I bought my first power tool.

I sanded it, but since I didn't like the original brass hardware, I had just decided to leave it turned around and you wouldn't be able to see the fake drawers and it would look like this. I put the before picture and this one on Facebook and you guys loved it! Thanks!

Kyle got home and suggested "we" paint the original hardware white. I figured it would be better than sitting and watching the playoffs all day, so "I" did.

Update***

A couple of weeks later I bought some dark wax and decided to try my hand at it. I was pretty nervous, but it came out perfectly! I think part of the success is that I did buy that wax brush.
